John Higgins- 1981
Member of a world record medley relay team- 1935. Held numerous state and national championships. Bronze medalist- 1936 Olympics in Berlin (Breaststroke)...Credited with revolutionizing the butterfly stroke. Headswim coach at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Past President of American Swimming Coaches Association.

Raymond P. Lamore-1981
One of the most respected swimming and diving officials in Rhode Island and New England. Served as Rhode Island AAU swimming commissioner. Charter member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic swimming officials. Recipient of the Joseph Tracey Memorial Award in 1971 for his contribution to the field of aquatics in Rhode Island.

Joseph “Bud” Latham- 1981
Rhode Island and New England AAU Junior diving champion in the 1930’s.  Former swim coach at Providence YMCA. Served 32 years as director and  coach at Fox Point Boys Club. Received Boys Club of America Meritorious  Service Award. Governor’s Boy Award and the Red Cross 25 year Service Award.

Clara Lamore Walker- 1981
Received the Sportscaster and Writers Award as Rhode Island Athlete of the Year in 1947, and named New England AAU Athlete of the Year in both 1946 and 1947. Undefeated for five consecutive years indoors and out, in all strokes and distances (1944-1948). Member of the 1948 United States Olympic Team that competed in London. Held eleven All-American titles, five national championships, two American records and one world record.

Joe Watmough- 1981
Pool Director and Coach at Olneyville Boys Club 16 years. Developed many nationally famous swimmers. Brown University Swim Coach, 1943-1971. Four New England titles. Past-President, Rhode Island Swim Coaches and Officials Association. Chairman, National Boys Clubs Swimming Committee.  Swim Chairman for New England Association of AAU for ten years. First recipient of Joseph Tracey Memorial Award in 1969.

Roy Watmough- 1981
Appointed swimming director of Wanskuck Boys Club in 1941. Director of water safety training at Providence College and for armed forces(1942-1944). Past President of Rhode Island Examining Board, state recreation and water safety. Coached swim teams at LaSalle Academy and East Providence High School. Recipient of Boys Clubs of America Bronze Keystone Award and the Joseph Tracey Memorial Award in 1977. Past president- New England Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

Doris Brennan Weir- 1981
One of the nations most outstanding female swimmers. Held all New England senior women’s titles and five national championships. Member of the 1941 United States Olympic team. Member of Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.

Matthew Chrostowski- 1982
Outstanding interscholastic and AAU swimmer in the 1930’s. Competed for Central High School and Olneyville Boys Club. In 1934 Matt set interscholastic national records in the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle events, and he established a world record with a time of 29.2 seconds for the 60 yard freestyle. Competed in Japan in 1934 as a member of an American team against the Japanese Olympic team. Matt won the 100 meter freestyle in 1934 at the Polish Olympics in Warsaw, Poland.

Doris Kelman Dannenhirsch- 1982
Swimming for the Olneyville Boys Club, Doris won numerous Rhode Island and New England championships in the 1930’s. In 1935 she was a member of the U.S. Maccabian team, which represented the United States at the Jewish Olympic Games in Palestine, placing fifth in the 100 meter freestyle. Doris was the founder of one of the nations first synchronized swimming teams called the Penguinettes and she coached this group until her retirement in 1977 as a faculty member of the University of Pennsylvania.

Basil Francis- 1982
The first Rhode Islander to compete on a United States Olympic Swimming Team finishing fourth in the breaststroke at Los Angeles in 1932. Held nearly every Rhode Island and New England breaststroke record in the 1930’s. Competed for the Providence YMCA during his school years. Basil is considered one of the pioneers of competitive swimming in Rhode Island.

Carl G. Paulson, Jr.- 1982
One of Brown University’s greatest swimmers. The first swimmer
representing Brown to win an NCAA title, the 200 yard breaststroke in 1944.  Won numerous Rhode Island and New England AAU championships, in his youth, while swimming for the Central Boys Club in Providence. Listed in “Who’s Who” in American Colleges, in 1947, for his outstanding record in swimming.

Commodore Wilbert E. Longfellow- 1982
Water Safety Crusader.... Responsible for a nationwide program of swimming and lifesaving instructors in the early 1900’s. His vision, plus his aquatic skills, teaching abilities, showmanship, and enthusiasm made him the natural leader for his enterprise. As a Water Safety Director for the American Red Cross he achieved his lifetime goal of “waterproofing America.”

Max W. Read- 1982
Well known and highly respected interscholastic swim coach. His Pawtucket High School teams dominated swimming in Rhode Island in the 1930’s and 1940’s, winning thirteen state titles. In 1952 his team won the New England championship. Max was honored by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association in 1960 for his 25 years of dedication and service as a high school swim coach. One of the outstanding swim events for Rhode Island high school swimmers each season is the Max Read Memorial Swimming
Meet.

Paul L. Rossi- 1982
Premiere distance freestyler in the 1930’s for the Wanskuck Boys Club. Aquatic director, coach, and swimming instructor. National Junior AAU 500 freestyle winner and record holder. Named Outstanding Athlete of the Year by the Boys Clubs of America in 1935. Past President of the New England AAU coaches and officials association, and the Rhode Island swim coaches
and officials association. Recipient of the Joseph Tracey Memorial Award.

Jack Ryan- 1982
Set many records in AAU and Interscholastic swimming events with the
Pawtucket Boys Club and Pawtucket High School. Set national prep school record in the 440 yard freestyle while attending Worcester Academy. Elected to the All-American team nine times during collegiate career at Ohio State. Big Ten champion in 440 yard freestyle. Coached swimming at West Point since 1959, and his team won the Eastern Intercollegiate League
title in 1965-1966.

William Ryan- 1982
Competed for the Pawtucket Boys Club and Pawtucket High School. National Junior champion in 150 yard Individual Medley. A standout swimmer for the Ohio State University team that won the “Grand slam” of swimming ŕt the National NCAA title and National AAU indoor and outdoor championships, and the Big Ten championship in the same year. Under his guidance as Chief of Parks and Recreation, Rhode Island had one of the finest lifeguard programs
in the United States.

Captain Roger W. Wheeler- 1982
One of the country’s leading proponents of life saving techniques, with
years of dedication to recreational safety for the residents of Rhode
Island. Designed a life jacket for the Army Air Force during WWII that
became standard equipment. Introduced long distance swim competition in Rhode Island. In 1970, the beach at Sand Hill Cove was named in his honor:  “The Captain Roger W. Wheeler Memorial State Beach”.

Russell E. Branch- 1983
Premier backstroker in the 1930’s. Held all state and New England
backstroke titles while swimming for the Olneyville Boys Club. Competed for Hope High School winning the backstroke in the Brown Interscholastic, New England Interscholastic, and National High School championships. Member of the 1935 United States medley relay team that competed in Japan and set a world record.

Andrew Dimant- 1983
Outstanding AAU swimmer for the Pawtucket Boys Club in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. New England and national record holder in distance events. Won the 400 and 1500 meter freestyle events in an international meet, for servicemen, held in Germany in 1945. Coach the Pawtucket Boys Club to the New England and national senior Boys Club championships in 1953, 1954, and
1955.

Richard Fadgen- 1983
LaSalle High School All-American in the breaststroke and individual medley events in 1952, 1953, 1954. Recipient of Brother Flavian Award as outstanding LaSalle Athlete in 1953 and was named Rhode Island High School Athlete of the Year by Words Unlimited in 1954. Swam for North Carolina State and made the national collegiate and AAU All-American teams in 1954, 1955, 1956. Head coach of swimming at Memphis State University.

Edmond J. Mongeon- 1983
Held Rhode Island and New England AAU records in the 1930’s, swimming for the Pawtucket Boys Club and Pawtucket High School. Former aquatic director and coach at Pawtucket Boys Club. Appointed national director of water safety services for the American Red Cross in 1964. President of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1973. European Director of Safety Services for the Red Cross (1975-1978). Recipient of Medal of Freedom.

Frank M. Moody- 1983
The dean of Rhode Island water safety. Over 60 years of service in all
phases of lifesaving. A pioneer in lifeguard certification for both public
and private swimming areas while serving as Inspector for the State
Recreation Safety Department. Designed and built special rescue equipment. In 1977 the state beach at Lincoln Woods was dedicated and named “Frank Moody State Beach.”

George Patrick- 1983
One of Rhode Island’s first diving stars. Won the Rhode Island Junior andSenior championships in his career, plus the New England diving title.  Recipient of seven gold, twelve silver, and seven bronze medals in major New England diving competitions. One of eight finalists in the Olympic tryouts in 1935. Coached the Olneyville Boys Club Swim Team to the New England Championship in 1947. 

Harold D. Stanhope- 1983
AAU state and New England backstroke champion in the 1930’s representing the Olneyville Boys Club. Excelled in interscholastic competition while attending Lockwood High School winning every backstroke event he entered at the New England, Brown, Yale, and Harvard Interscholastic championships.  Big Ten champion in the 150 yard backstroke at Ohio State. National collegiate champion in the 1500 meter freestyle. 

Phil Carson- 1984
Outstanding freestyle swimmer in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Set state and NewEngland records for the Providence Central Boys Club. Competed for Hope High School, Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, and Brown University.  New England AAU champion in the 200, 400, and 500 yard freestyle. Also held New England record in the 300 Individual Medley.

William P. Despres- 1984
Outstanding swimmer and diver for the Olneyville Boys Club in 1930’s. Won National Junior championships in the 50 yard freestyle. Held several state and New England senior swim titles. Conference champion at North Carolina State. Coached swimming at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. Developednthree national champions and an Olympic gold medal winner.

Ralph G. Gossler- 1984
Premier freestyler in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Competed for the Pawtucket Boys Club, Pawtucket East High School, and Brown University. Set two national records in Boys Club Competition. Undefeated in the 100 and 50 freestyle events in state, New England, and national high school competition from 1939 and 1942. Number one high school swimmer in the nation in 1942. Set New England records in sprint events at Brown University.

James Lynch- 1984
Prominent Rhode Island aquatic director and swimming coach. Initiated
several successful swimming programs. Coached Cranston West High School to five state titles in the 1970’s including the New England championships in 1972. Served as president of the Rhode Island and New England swim coaches association. Received the Joseph L. Tracey Memorial Award in 1975 for his contribution to the field of aquatics.

Ellis Mayers- 1984
Dedicated swim instructor and coach. Swam in competition for the Pawtucket Boys Club and St. Raphael Academy. Legendary coaching career at Pawtucket Boys Club, St. Raphael Academy, and Seekonk High School in Massachusetts. Coached Seekonk to seven Southeast Massachusetts Conference championships, three state titles, and two New England championships. Named swim coach of
the year in 1979 and 1982 by Boston Globe.

Matthew Soltysiak -1984
Excelled in every swimming stroke in AAU competition for the Olneyville Boys Club. Held several state and New England Interscholastic titles while swimming for Central High School. Undefeated in three years of varsity competition at Brown University. Won New England intercollegiate titles in the 300 individual medley, 200 breaststroke, 400 freestyle, and anchored
championship relay teams.

Edna Soltysiak Sotnik- 1984
Rhode Island, New England, and national AAU champion in numerous swim events competing for the Olneyville Boys Club. National AAU Junior indoor 200 breast champion. New England Senior outdoor long distance champion. American AAU record holder in the 220 breaststroke event. Member of the New England AAU championship, 300 yard medley relay team representing the
Olneyville Boys' Club.

Harold Anderson- 1985 
Red Cross Water Safety director with thirty seven years of dedicated
service. Competed for Olneyville Boys Club swim team in his youth. Past president of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Swim Officials, and recipient of Tracey Memorial Award in 1982. Received the International Order of Golden Whale Award from American Red Cross in 1981 for distinguished service. Director of the National Aquatic School at Camp Tevya, New Hampshire. First president of the Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame.

Leo Barry- 1985
Brown University swim coach for eighteen years. Won eleven New England titles and nine straight from 1932 to 1940. Coached outstanding swim teams at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania before he became head coach at Brown in 1924. Past president for college swimming coaches association. Possessed a great technical knowledge of the sport and a broad human
interest in his swimmers.

Kerry Donovan- 1985
Star freestyler for the Wanskuck Boys Club, LaSalle Academy, Exeter
Academy, and Yale University. Set national schoolboy Athlete of the Year in 1950. Prep school All-American at Exeter Academy. NCAA Intercollegiate All-American while competing for Yale. Member of relay teams in 1952 and 1955 that set national and world records.

Leonard Gath- 1985
Prominent diver for the Olneyville Boys Club and Bowdoin College.
Undefeated in three years at Central High School. AAU diving champion in Rhode Island from 1936 to 1941. Top diver at Bowdoin College and co-captain his senior year. Coached diving at Indiana University and State University college, Cortland, New York. Member of New York State swim officials association for over twenty-five years.

Edward M. Golden- 1985
Cranston East High School Swim coach from 1954 to 1965. Compiled a 132-13record that included 7 straight state titles and five New England championships, including four in a row. Coached Cranston East to four consecutive Brown Interscholastic titles. Formed age group and junior high swim programs in Cranston. Recipient of the Joseph Tracey Memorial Award in 1981. A pioneer in the latest swimming techniques.

Joseph Prata- 1985
Started his career under Roy Watmough at the Wanskuck Boys Club in early 1940’s. New England junior champion in the 300 individual medley and 200 breaststroke. Set an American record in the 100 meter backstroke in 1944. Swam for Ohio State University and made the NCAA All-American swimming team. Boston Herald American selection as top AAU swimmer in New England. Successful high school coaching career in El Granada, CA.

Diann Thomason Uustal- 1985
Outstanding swimmer for coach Bud Latham at the Providence Central Boys Club. First female recipient of the Edward Haire Award as the outstanding AAU Athlete in Rhode Island. Rhode Island Female Swimmer of the Year, 1961 through 1964. Placed first at the Junior National Championships in the 100 backstroke in 1964. All-American Masters swimmer in 1980, 1981, and 1982.

Winthrop Wilson- 1985
Top freestyler for Brown University from 1947- 1950. Held school records in the 220, 440, and 1500. All- American Masters Swimmer with numerous national championships and records. Top all around swimmer in his age group nationally for 1982 and 1983, in masters competition. Member of Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Robert Arwezon- 1986
Outstanding AAU swimmer in the 1940’s representing the Providence Central Boys Club. Won state and New England titles in the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. Excelled in every stroke and distance while attending Bowdoin College. Won the National Senior Long Distance championship in 1951. Named to the men’s All-American swimming
team in 1952.

Marion Senior Patterson- 1986
National junior individual medley champion in 1945, swimming for the
Wanskuck Boys Club. Teamed with her two sisters, Jean and Joan, in winning the New England AAU 300 yard medley relay championship in 1947. An outstanding backstroker who won his first New England womens senior championship in 1946, and successfully defended that title for the next
three years.

Edward W. Reed Jr.- 1986
All-American Swimmer in 1964 and 1965 competing for Springfield College. 1972 National Masters Champion in the breaststroke and individual medley.  Aquatic director, head swimming coach, and water polo coach of Brown University, 1971-1993. Coached the Brown swim team to New England Intercollegiate Association Championship in 1975. Developed the Brown water polo teams to national prominence with eleven consecutive New England Championships, and four Eastern titles, through 1986.

Carl Slader- 1986
Water Safety director for the Providence Chapter of the Red Cross from 1952 to 1975. Recipient of the prestigious “Golden Whale” Award for the Red Cross in 1972 for his outstanding achievements in aquatics. A pioneer in water safety programs with over fifty years of service.

Jean Senior Stephens- 1986
Premier backstroker for the Wanskuck Boys Club in the 1940’s. Dominated many New England AAU championship meets in that era, and won the New England senior 200 meter breaststroke championship in 1949. Swam the breaststroke leg of the victorious Senior sisters 300 yard medley relay.

Joan Senior Tramonti- 1986
A top performer in the breaststroke event representing the Wanskuck Boys Club in the 1940’s. Winner of the Boston- American NEAAU 100 meter breaststroke championship in 1949. Freestyle swimmer of the unique three sister team that won the New England 300 yard medley relay title in 1947. 

Anthony Soltysiak- 1986
Prominent swimmer for the Olneyville Boys Club during the 1930’s. Won numerous state and New England AAU titles. Gained national recognition in 1939 swimming for Central High School. Set several records competing for Bowdoin College and was elected captain in the 1948-49 season. Past president of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Swimming Officials Association. Recipient of the Joseph L. Tracey Award in 1983.

Richard Burrows- 1987
Outstanding age group, high school, and collegiate swimmer. Led the
Cranston West Falcons to the State and New England high school
championships in 1972. Set several New England and varsity records while competing for Brown University under coach Ed Reed from 1972-1976. Head swimming coach for the Little Rhody Aquatic Club from 1979- 1984. All-American Masters swimmer. Head coach at Denison University (Ohio).  NCAA division III swimming coach of the year in 1986.

Bruce Calvert- 1987
Prominent Rhode Island Interscholastic swim coach. Led the Cumberland High  School Swim Team to six State Championships, two New England titles, five Max Reed Memorial Championships, and two Brown Interscholastic titles, from 1973 to 1987. Coached Cumberland High School to sixty seven consecutive dual meet victories. All-State breaststroker for Tolman in high school competition. Past president at the Rhode Island and New England Swim Coaches Association, and Examiner for the Rhode Island lifeguards certification committee.

William Cusati- 1987
Devoted over 40 years of service to Aquatics. Competed in age group
swimming for the Wanskuck Boys Club. Director of swimming and head coach for the Wanskuck and Southside Boys Club. Coached the Armed Forces Swimming Team at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. Rhode Island Recreational Safety Inspector and Supervisor of Lifeguards. Received the 30 year Volunteer Service Award from the American Red Cross, Providence Chapter in 1983.

Walter Klimasewski- 1987
Prominent swimming and diving champion for the Olneyville Boys Club in the 1930’s. Rhode Island 50 meter freestyle champion in 1930, and the New England 100 yard freestyle champion in 1931. Rhode Island State lifeguard, swimming and water safety instructor, coach and official. Named to the New England Masters’ Top Ten (1981- 1986), and to the National Masters’ long course top ten in 1985. 

Harold Miroff- 1987
Outstanding coach and swimming director in the 1950’s. Coached the Boys Club team at Olneyville and Waltham to many state and New England championships. Led the LaSalle Academy swim team to three state titles, three National Catholic championships, two Brown Interscholastic championships and the New England high school championship. Diving coach and assistant swim coach at Harvard University 1966-72. Served as Director of Aquatics for the Boston School Department.

Janet Moreau Stone- 1987
Top competitive swimmer in the 1940’s for the Olneyville Boys Club and Pawtucket Boys Club. New England AAU Junior Champion in the 100 yard freestyle, 150 yard individual medley, 100 yard backstroke, and 100 yard breaststroke in 1945. National Junior 100 meter freestyle champion in 1947. Undefeated while swimming for the Pawtucket East High School. Member of the Rhode Island AAU All- State Team in 1948 and 1949. Lifeguard, swim instructor, and coach in the Pawtucket area for 10 years.

James K. Edwards- 1988
Swam for the University of Michigan and West Point in early 1940’s. Topcompetitor in Rhode Island VJ Day and Save-the-Bay distance swims. All-American Masters swimmer in 1979, 1983, 1984, and 1987. Pioneer of Masters Swimming in Rhode Island.


Ernest Hulme- 1988
Began competitive career at Pawtucket West High School in 1944. Swam in 1947 for United States Army and was a member of the All-Japan Swim Team. Equalled the national YMCA 60 yard freestyle record in 1949. Member of the national record-breaking medley relay in 1983 and 1984 in Masters competition. Originated “Swim for Kids” annual charity event in Rhode Island in 1979.

David McIntyre- 1988
Premier age group, high school, and college swimmer in the 1940’s and
1950’s. Won numerous New England Junior titles, swimming for the Pawtucket West High School and North Carolina State. College All-American in 1955.  Set an American AAU record in Club team that set a world record in the 400 medley relay in 1956 the 160 individual medley in 1955. Member of the North Carolina State Aquatic Club.

David Roach- 1988
Swam competitively at Springfield College, co-captain in 1970-1971. Brown University womens swim coach from 1978-1986. Compiled a 74-6-1 record with four Ivy League and two Eastern Swim League championships. Head womens coach at the University of Tennessee since 1986. Southeastern Conference Co-Swim Coach-of-the-Year.

Peter Solomon- 1988
Premier age group, interscholastic, and college backstroker. National
Junior record holder in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. Rhode Island
Swimmer-of-the-Year for three consecutive years (age group). All-State Interscholastic Swimmer and All-American (1978) competing for East Providence High School. Named Rhode Island Interscholastic
Swimmer-of-the-Year in 1979. Co-captain of North Carolina State swim team, coach of private and masters swim club in the Raleigh, North Carolina area.

William Sonner- 1988
Top Rhode Island backstroker during the 1947-57 era. New England and state champion, in the 100 yard backstroke, swimming for the Pawtucket East high school. Number one backstroker in the United States in high school competition and a member of the All-American backstroker for Ohio State University (1950-1951) and North Carolina State University (1955).

Alice Sullivan- 1988
Devoted over forty years of service to the field of aquatics served as
water-front director and swimming instructor for summer camps in Maine and New Hampshire. Volunteer water safety instructor for the Providence Red Cross. First woman on the board of Rhode Island Interscholastic Swim Officials. Coordinator of girls athletics for Rhode Island high schools.

Henry Burrows- 1989
Age group, interscholastic, college, and masters swimming official.
Contributed over twenty five years of service to the sport of swimming and diving and officiated at the state, national, and international level.
Swim instructor for age group competition at the Cranston Swim Club and the Brown Swim Club. Active member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Swimming Officials, Rhode Island Swim Coach and Official Association, Eastern Massachusetts High School Official, and the New England Coaches and Officials Association.

Constance Mills Drew- 1989
Competed for Providence Central Boys Club in the late 1940’s. Organized and taught the first Cape Cod Special Needs program. Water safety and swim instructor for thousands of youngsters and adults in Cape Cod. Red CrossAquatic School staff for ten years. Director of Hyannis Yacht Club swim program and aquatic instructor for the Cape Cod YMCA for over twenty years.

Donald Read- 1989
All-American high school freestyle swimmer at Pawtucket East High School. Ranked first in the country in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle in 1952 and 1953. Southeastern Conference champion in 1954,1955, and 1956 at the University of Florida. Rocky Mountain champion in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle for the University of Colorado. National Long Course Masters champion in the 50 freestyle.

Gerald Jennings- 1989
Competitive diver who earned All-American honors at Cranston High School. Atlantic Coast Conference champion diver for the University of Maryland. Former head coach of swimming and diving at Washington and Jefferson college. Coached nineteen Division III All American swimmers and divers at Washington and Jefferson. Served as director and staff official at the Division III NCAA Championships for over twenty years.

John Stoyko- 1989
Outstanding swimmer for the Woonsocket YMCA in the 1930’s. Aquatic director and swim coach for the Woonsocket YMCA from the 1940’s to the early 1960’s. Developed one of the first aquatic classes for the handicapped. Charter member of the Rhode Island Swimming Officials Interscholastic Sportsmanship Award in swimming presented annually in his honor.

Witold “Andy” Babula- 1990
Competed for the Olneyville Boys Club in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Won numerous state and New England AAU titles. National Junior champion in the 100 yard freestyle. First junior high student to compete in 1936 Olympic trials earning two silver medals.

Ralph Brisco- 1990
Pawtucket East high school All-State freestyler. Helped lead his team to the Interscholastic state championship in 1949 and 1950. Pawtucket Boys Club competitor and member of the Boys Club of America All-Star Team in 1950. Set records in the 50, 100, 200, and 440 yard freestyle while competing for Brown University. Selected as an NCAA All-American in 1953.

Billie Ann Burrill- 1990

Champion backstroker for Pawtucket East high school, Pawtucket Boys Club, and Brown University. Member of the Pawtucket East State Championship Teams of 1949 and 1950. Broke national AAU record in the 150 yard backstroke in 1950. Member of the Boys Club of America National All-Star Team Interscholastic All- American in 1950. Freshman record breaker at Brown University. Swims at masters level and coached YMCA swimming.

Thomas Manfredi- 1990
Distinguished age group, high school, and college swimmer. All-State and,New England Champion while competing for Cranston High School East. Captain of the University of Maryland swim team that won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 1964 and 1965. Coached Niagra University swim team. Top ten masters ranking in the 50 and 100 yard butterfly stroke (45-50 age group). Specialist and foremost authority on cardiac rehabilitation.

representative. Directed three national aquatic schools. Member of the

Outstanding backstroker in the 1965-75 era. Competed for the Kendbrin swim club, Barrington YMCA, Barrington High School, and Bowdoin College. Named Rhode Island Swimmer-of-the-Year in 1970 and 1971. Interscholastic All- Stater three consecutive years (1970, 1971, and 1972). All-American NCAA (Division II and III) in 1973, 1974, and 1975 for intercollegiate competition at Bowdoin College.

Prominent swimming and diving coach at University of Rhode Island. New England Intercollegiate Coach-of-the-Year in 1987 and 1990. Member of Special Olympics Committee. Past president of New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (women and men). Charter member and past president of Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame.

Henry Dunbar- 1991
Outstanding swim coach at Amherst College with over 315 dual meet victories (Sports Illustrated.) Over 40 years of service in aquatics and coaching. Coached 6 national championships and 35 All-Americans. Coach-of -the-Year in 1988 (Division III.) 3-term president of New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association, and served on Men’s Olympic Swim Committee (1972-76.) Named “Distinguished Coach” by College Swim Coaches Association of America in 1972.

Three year recipient of Mather Award given annually to the outstanding backstroker at Yale University. Coached Lincoln High School to 2 consecutive Division “B” titles.

Bob Nelson- 1991
Prominent age group, high school, and collegiate swimmer. State and New England champion for Cranston East in the early 1960’s. Named Rhode Island male swimmer-of-the-year in 1962, 1963, and 1964. All-American for US Naval Academy in the 200 yd. Individual Medley. Held Naval Academy records in the 200 fly, 200 IM, and 1000 freestyle.

Kenneth Reall- 1991
Outstanding competitive swimmer for the Wanskuck Boys Club, LaSalle Academy, and Southern Connecticut State University. Well known swim coach and teacher at East Providence High School and Little Rhody Aquatic Club. Coached interscholastic All-American and National Junior Champion Swimmers. Coaching record includes four John Stoyko Sportsmanship Awards. Recipient of the Joseph Tracey Award for Distinguished Service to Interscholastic Swimming.

Outstanding competitive swimmer, diver, and coach. Competed for the Fox Point Boys Club, Rhode Island Aquatic Association, LaSalle Academy, Cranston YMCA, and Keene State University. All-State and Rhode Island swimmer of the year in 1973. Division II All-American at Keene State. National masters diving champion in 1980 and 1984.

Leo Sarcione- 1992
President and swim coach for the Rhode Island Aquatic Association in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Coached the third Air Force swim team during WWII. Served on the building committee for the McDermott Pool in 1975. Served over twenty five years as a Red Cross water safety instructor. Outstanding service to competitive swimming and aquatics.

Louise Sherlock Tighe- 1992
Champion swimmer in the 1940’s, competing for the Olneyville Boys Club and Wanskuck Boys Club. Won numerous junior NE England AAU titles in the freestyle, backstroke, and individual medley. National Junior Champion in the individual medley, the half mile, and two mile events. Named New England female swimmer of the year by the Boston Record-American Advertiser in 1949.

In 1949-50 she won the Block Island Swim, the Battery to Coney Island Swim, and the Fall River City Length Swim. She also placed sixth in the World Professional long Distance Swim in Lake Ontario, Canada. Althea instructed swimming over twenty four years for the Providence school system. 1972 she was honored by traveling to California as swimming coach representing RI at the National Special Olympics. She was the first Water Safety Instructor Trainer for the handicapped at the Red Cross National Aquatic School. Althea was the first women to become a lifeguard for the State of RI at Second Beach in Newport. She received a commendation from Superintendent
Joseph Almasno, Mayor Cianci, and John McKenna, Director of Special Education for saving the life of a 14 year old special education student at Pleasant View School.

Awarded the New England Swimming and Diving Association’s Robert Muir Award. 1979 New England Intercollegiate Champion in the 400 IM. Ray’s Freshman year at URI he was undefeated in dual meet competition swimming such events at the 1000 Free, 200 Fly, and 500 Free. At Cranston West Ray held school and pool records in the 500 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 200 IM, and 400 Freestyle Relay. He helped lead Cranston West to State Championships in 1975 and 1976 as well as place 2nd in the New England Championships in 1976. In 1977 he participated in he 400 IM at the National Championships in Mission Viejo, CA. At Cranston West he earned First Team All-State in 1976-1977. President of the URI Fast Lane Club for three years.

James "Jimmy" Phelan - 1999
AAU National Qualifier. Held over 100 age group records. Outstanding
Swimmer of the Year-New England, 1973. National Swimming Pool Institute.
RI All-State in 1976 for LaSalle Academy. Competed at Brown University.

Rebecca Adams - 2000 
Competed for East Side YMCA, Cranston YMCA, and the
Little Rhody Aquatic Club. 1982 RI Senior Champion 200, 500, 1,650
Freestyle. State Senior records in the 500 and 1,650 Freestyle. 1983 New
England Senior Champion 1,500 and 1,650 freestyle. National Junior Olympic
Championship Qualifier, 1983, 1984. 13 Pool and School Records at
Dartmouth College, 1984-1988. Finalists for the Kurtz Award as Dartmouth’s
Outstanding Female Athlete, 1988.

Tony Andrade - 2000 
Competed in swimming and diving at Fox Point Boys Club.
New England Junior Champion, 50 Freestyle, 1948. All-State Diver, 1949,
Hope High School. Longtime Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Renowned
performer at diving exhibitions.

Michael Barrowman - 2000 
1992 Olympic Champion, 200 Breaststroke. World
Record Holder 200 Breaststroke. Six time NCAA Champion at Michigan. NCAA
Swimmer of the Year, 1990. USS Swimmer of the Year,. Undefeated in
international competition, 1988-1992. State and New England record holder
for Cumberland Lincoln Boy’s Club.

Tom Dwyer - 2000 
Outstanding age group swimmer, Cranston YMCA and Brown
Swim Club. Established several New England age group records. All-State,
First Team, 100 Breaststroke, 1976-1978. New England Interscholastic
Champion, 100 yard Breaststroke, 1976-1978. 1977 New England AAU Champion,
100, 200 Breaststroke. NCAA Division III All-American at Alfred University

Tony Hayter - 2000 
Longtime swimming coach at the Pawtucket YMCA. Coached
several Nationally ranked swimmers. Coached numerous New England ranked
swimmers.

Ronald Anderson - 2002
Member of Ed Golden's New England Championship team for Cranston East in 1959.  Earned All-State in the 50, 100 freestyle and 200 Individual Medley in 1960.  He attended the Coast Guard Academy and is a retired Cranston Police officer.

Phyllis Bileau Geisser - 2002
Swam for Bud Latham at the Fox Point Boys Club.  During the 1950's she won state championships in a variety of events.  She captured New England titles in 1956 and 1957 in the 200 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, and 200 backstroke.  She was named Rhode Island's Outstanding Swimmer in 1957 and 1958.  She continued her career at the University of Connecticut.

Rob Berry - 2002
Rob was one of  New England's best backstrokers being selected to two New England Zone Championships in the 100 and 200 backstrokes in 1983  and 1984.  He also qualified for the National Junior Olympics in 1985, 1986, and 1987 finishing twelfth in the 200 backstroke in 1986 and tenth in 1987.   He was named Rhode Island Swimmer of the Yeat in 1986.  He is currently the Director of Aquatics at Harvard University where he coaches a master's team.

George Gibbons - 2002
George excelled at local , regional and national levels from the Olneyville Boys Club.  He was New England Champion in the 220 yard freestyle, 300 yard individual medley and 880 freestyle.  At Brown University he set a new England Intercollegiate record in the 200 breaststroke, the 300 individual medley , and the 440 freestyle over a two year period.   At the national AAU level he finished fifth in the 200 breastroke in 1940 and thrid in the 300 individual medley in 1941.

Chris Giglio - 2002
Excelled as a swimmer at the Barrington YMCA and the Barrington high school.  He won New England YMCA and USS titles in the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle.  He was an All-State high school swimmer three consecutive years leading his teams to two state championships.  He set state records in the 200 IM, and as member of the 200 medley relay team that earned All-America honors.  He went on to swim at Williams College where he earned NCAA Division III Honorable mention All-America.

Karen Crossman - 2002
Competed for the Kent County YMCA, Bay View, Little Rhody Aquatic Club, and Providence College.  She won numerous state and regional events  before earning All-State and Prep School All-American honors at Bay View in the 100 backstroke and 200 medley relay.  In 1986 she ranked first in the US in the 100 backstroke for her age group.  Karen also competed at the National Junior Olympics in 1987 in the 100 yard and 100 meter backstroke.   In 1988, she won the Big east title in the 100 backstroke wj=hile swimming for Providence College. 

Jack Smith - 2002
Began his career in the Water Safety program for the Red Cross.  He swam for Andy Dimant and Max Read at the Pawtucket Boys Club.  Smith excelled as a diver while representing Pawtucket East in 1953 and 1954 when he won the New England diving event.  He enlisted in the Army and competed for Army where he finished ninth in the All Army invitational diving event in 1956.  He may be best known for establishing the Max Read Memorial Swimming and Diving meet in honor of his former coach.
